SEMESTER 1

Architectural Design 1
(ARC60208)

Mr. Yoong Chern Li

Core module on designing spaces. Consists of 3 Projects which focuses on design principles, elements, tectonics, anthropometry, ergonomics and sensorial experience.

ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN 1

PROJECT 3

This individual project aims to introduce sensorial experience in relation to space and form. To create a sensory space that interacts with the human body through various senses. This project is a continuation of Project 2 to form a structure expressing a dominant emotion during the pandemic. The structure should aim to tell a story of the user's journey that is practical yet poetic.

PROJECT 3

Interpretation and Representation: Principles, Tectonics and Sensory

Ouroboros is the snake that eats itself, symbolising infinity. The endless loop of the pandemic conveys this idea of being constricted by the snake. The irregular hexagonal modules of the structure creates claustrophobic narrow and dark spaces that is similar to a prison. Meanwhile the open bamboo courtyard in the middle is the end of the journey in which the pandemic is over. From narrow and dark to open and bright, the sensorial experience relates to the journey, with design elements such as modular and golden ratio.

REFLECTION

The final and most important project of this semester, I poured my time and effort into the project. The structure went through many changes and variation before reaching its final form. Through this project, I was able to understand the importance of sensorial experience when designing a space. Materials, size and form of the space and light are among the factors that will invoke the user's emotion in a sensory space. Every design should focus on what kind of experience they want to inject into the user based on the theme.
