SEMESTER 1

Architectural Design 1
(ARC60208)

Mr. Yoong Chern Li

Core module on designing spaces. Consists of 3 Projects which focuses on design principles, elements, tectonics, anthropometry, ergonomics and sensorial experience.

ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN 1

PROJECT 2

This individual project aims to introduce anthropometry and ergonomics in relation to form and space. Research of the shape, size and position of the human body is vital. This project also aims to teach the basics of tectonics with timber to create an isolation space/structure.

PROJECT 2

Tectonics: Design Principles, Anthropometric and Ergonomic Exploration-Isolation Structure

Bamboo Basilisk is an isolation structure with the banal action of lying down in the semi-fowlers position. It incorporates intersecting and movement design principles. Bamboo is tied together using square lashings with jute rope, covered by weaved palm leaves as the roof of the structure.

REFLECTION

As the first individual project of this journey, I was forced to work alone and at home due to the pandemic. I was still able to get opinions and feedback from friends and tutors. My ideas can be expressed without clashing with groupmates. Learning the dimensions of the human body and how the space around it works was interesting but tedious. Every space has to account for the variations in size of the human body. Other than that, I was able to experiment with bending bamboo for the tectonics to create this exciting shape and structure.
